Gamboa mum on Espenido's reported inclusion in drug watchlist, asks for 'respect'

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa remained mum on the report that Police Lieutenant Colonel Jovie Espenido was included in the government's drug watchlist.

Pressed by reporters in Camp Crame early Thursday morning, Gamboa again refused to disclose further details about the controversial drug watchlist.

“Ang sinabi ko naman sa inyo respect our [request]. It was, ano, nakiusap naman ako, di ba? Nakiusap ako na huwag na sana nating tingnan ‘yung mga personalities, and you know the intention,” Gamboa said.

“‘Yun ang sinasabi ko, I will not answer [your question],” he added.

On Wednesday, a reliable source confirmed to GMA News Online that Espenido, a favored cop by President Rodrigo Duterte, was included on the list. The source, however, ensured that the allegation against Espenido and other policemen will be probed.

Earlier, Gamboa bared that 357 policemen are being investigated for their alleged link to illegal drug trade. Of that number, 15 preferred to avail optional retirement while 43 had gone AWOL (absence without leave).

Duterte, who made the war on illegal drugs the centerpiece of his administration, has repeatedly made pronouncements that he wants death for the cops allegedly involved in illegal drugs.

Asked for reaction on the latest remark of Duterte, Gamboa said: “Alam niyo naman si Presidente. Siyempre sa dami ng iniisip ni Presidente, ano naman marami naman siyang declaration.” —KBK, GMA News
