Sotto: Slain BuCor exec said he wanted to tell all on GCTA mess

Slain Bureau of Corrections official Fredric Anthony Santos had indicated his intention to tell all he knew about the misapplication of the Good Conduct Time Allowance Law, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said on Wednesday.

Sotto said the authorities should find those responsible for the shooting of Santos in front of his child's school near the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

"He earlier informed me thru Sen Lacson that he was ready to tell all before the last hearing on the GCTA," Sotto told reporters.

"The DOJ should get to the bottom of this dastardly act," he added.

Santos, however, reneged on his word, Sotto said.

"Pinaasa lang kami," Sotto said.

Several witnesses before a Senate inquiry last year said that some BuCor officials received money from inmates who wanted to have GCTA credits so they could be released soon.

One of the high-profile inmates who was almost released on GCTA credits was former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez who was convicted for the double murder of UP students Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez in 1993.

Santos was on board his pick-up when he was gunned down in front of a school in Barangay Poblacion, some 100 meters away from the main gate of NBP.

Santos was suspended by the Ombudsman in September in connection with the controversy over the alleged misapplication of the GCTA law.

This resulted in the release of the at least 500 convicts, including those sentenced for the killing of the Chiong sisters in the late 1990s. —NB, GMA News
