Zarate throws shade at Sinas, gets his own birthday ‘mañanita’

Bayan Muna party-list Representative Carlos Zarate on Thursday threw shade at National Capital Region Police Office chief Police Major General Debold Sinas as he got his own "mañanita" in celebration of his birthday.

In a video shared with reporters, Zarate filmed himself apparently being awakened very early in the morning by the sound of people singing outside his house.

Zarate appeared to not have expected the "mañanita" for him, which is a surprise serenade to wake up someone who is celebrating their birthday.

It turned out, however, that the sound of the "mañanita" for Zarate was in fact only coming from a YouTube video.

"SINAS...abi nila ngayon, bawal muna ang party-party kaya, ito sa YouTube na lang muna," the lawmaker said.

"Pwede namang magkaroon ng mañanita, huwag na munang gayahin yung ginagawa ng mga kapulisan," he added.

Zarate was referring to the other "mañanita" held in celebration of Sinas' birthday on May 8, which received flak for supposedly violating social distancing protocols.

Photos of the "mañanita" were also posted on the official Facebook page of the NCRPO's Public Information Office but have since been deleted.

According to Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, the "mañanita" is a tradition among the police and military where they greet their commander a "happy birthday" at the early break of the morning.

Sinas has already apologized for what happened during his birthday, but claimed that some of the photos that circulated were "edited."

Philippine National Police chief Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa has already directed the Internal Affairs Service to conduct a probe into Sinas' birthday celebration.

Sinas said he would not take a leave pending investigation of his controversial mañanita unless he will be ordered to do so. — BM, GMA News
