ON EID'L FITR

Gamboa to Pinoy Muslims: Reflect on strengthening bond with Christians

Philippine National Police chief Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa on Sunday urged Filipino Muslims to “strengthen the bonds of unity and solidarity among Muslims and Christians” as the country celebrates Eid’l Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

“Eid’l Fitr reminds us not of our differences, but of the ideals and goals that unite us as one people, as Filipinos seeking to rise above difficulties and to triumph in the midst of adversity,” Gamboa said in his Eid’l Fitr message.

“I regret that we cannot celebrate Eid’l Fitr this year like we traditionally do because of the ongoing health crisis but I am grateful for the understanding and cooperation of our Filipino Muslim communities,” he added.

Despite the absence of celebration, Gamboa said it does not in any way diminish the respect for the customs that Filipino Muslims greatly value and adhere to.

“This sincere gesture of respect and consideration shows that your Philippine National Police serves, with equal commitment and dedication, a multi-faith society of mixed cultures and faiths,” he said.

“By strengthening the fabric of unity among Muslims and Christians, we move closer to our shared goals as One Nation,” Gamboa added.

Meanwhile, in his message, presidential peace adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. said that while this year’s observance of Eid’l Fitr has been filled with challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has also tested “our resolve as individuals and as a people.”

“Despite these trials, members of the Islamic faith have shown greater compassion, understanding, and solidarity, while observing the obligations and traditions in accordance with the fatwa of the Grand Mufti and the Darul Ifta,” Galvez said.

“As we continue to sustain the gains of peace in the Bangsamoro,  may we also continue to help those who are most in need, and pray for the health and recovery of our nation as we heal as one,” he added.

Eid’l Fitr is celebrated by the Muslim world for three days after the end of Ramadan, which calls for spiritual reflection through praying, fasting, and abstaining from sinful behavior.
