Without gadgets, internet, Samar island student wonders how to cope with online learning

Without gadgets and internet connection, and even television, a student and a teacher in Almagro Island in Samar are wondering how they will cope with online learning introduced in the education system in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Wala po kaming good internet connectivity so hindi po ganoon ka-accessible kapag internet. Pupunta pa ng bundok talaga. Sa bundok kami nakakahnap ng internet connectivity," teacher Ricky Balat said in a report on Stand for Truth.

"Sabihin man ng DepEd na libre 'yung mga site. 'Yung mga gagamitan naman po wala rin sila," he added.

Grade 9 student Myles Jamdani tried to get a signal using a borrowed cellphone by going to a mountainous portion of the island during the interview.

"Mas maganda po 'yung nasa school kasi 'yung mga guro po nakakatulong... 'yung ibang nanay hindi afford nila 'yung mga pagbibili gaya ng laptop kasi 'yung iba mahirap," Jamdani said.

"Kaya kaming mga estudyante magandang nasa school kami," she added.

However, the Department of Education (DepEd) has said that face-to-face classes will not be allowed due to the pandemic.

The school is still waiting for the advisory from the DepEd in teaching in remote areas using the new system.
