Philippines reports 555 more COVID-19 cases, total up to 21,895


The Philippines on Sunday logged 555 more cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)—378 “fresh” or newly validated and 177 reported late—bringing the total to 21,895.

The Department of Health (DOH) also announced that total recoveries rose to 4,530 after 89 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness, while the death toll climbed to 1,003 with nine new fatalities.

Among the fresh cases, 67 are from Metro Manila, 104 are from Region VII, three are repatriates, while the remaining 204 are spread out across the country.

Among the late cases, 25 are from Metro Manila, 63 are from Region VII, while the 89 other patients came from various areas nationwide.

There are also 15,905 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 15,131 of which are mild, 698 are asymptomatic, while 57 are severe and 19 are in critical condition.

As of June 5, the Philippines has 41 certified polymerase chain reaction facilities and 13 GeneXpert laboratories that have tested 386,675 individuals.

The DOH earlier explained that the public should expect more new COVID-19 cases in the following days as the country ramps up its testing and case validation capacity. — DVM, GMA News
