Navy chief on quarantine after officer present at BRP Jose Rizal commissioning got infected with COVID-19

The Navy flag officer in command is undergoing self quarantine after a Navy officer who attended the blessing, christening and commissioning of BRP Jose Rizal (FF150) tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the Philippine Navy on Tuesday, Vice Admiral Giovanni Bacordo has been quarantined since Saturday. He is now waiting for the result of his swab test which was done earlier in the day.

The Navy said all personnel who were at the said event in Subic were ordered to observe self-quarantine and undergo RT/PCR testing.

"We also advised guests and stakeholders who attended the event, to go on self-quarantine or undergo PCR testing, or both," the Navy said in a statement.

The Navy further said all the crew of BRP Jose Rizal were already subjected to COVID-19 testing while preparing for the ship's participation in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise this year.

It added that those who would test positive for COVID-19 will be isolated in a quarantine facility ashore, while the other crew members will continue to make preparations for the maritime exercises.

"Rest assured that the Philippine Navy strictly complies with the health and safety protocols mandated by the IATF-EID to stem the transmission of this disease," the Navy said.

The BRP Jose Rizal is scheduled to leave for Hawaii on July 29. — RSJ, GMA News
