Kabataan representative Sarah Elago selected among 'One Young World Politicians of the Year'


Kabataan party-list, Sarah Elago, chosen among One Young World politicians for "using their positions to create change for young people in their communities and countries."

Elago, the first female representative of the youth party-list Kabataan, is on her second term and part of 12 House Committees, the youngest of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development, a member of the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, and serves as Ambassador for various non-profit organizations.

The other winners are:

  • Erik Marquardt, an MEP in Brussels and Straßbourg, recognized for his work with refugees in sea rescue missions.
  • Joana Mamombe, Zimbabwe’s youngest female Member of Parliament and a champion of human rights and gender activism.
  • Michael Tubbs became Stockton's first African-American mayor and the youngest mayor in the history of the United States to represent a city with a population over 100,000.
  • Zarifa Ghafari is the first female mayor in the history of Afghanistan.

The candidates are chosen among outstanding politicians between the ages of 18 - 35, who use their positions to have a positive impact on young people in their communities and countries and that their work reflects the benefit of including young people in politics.

The panel of judges, led by former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark, picked the final five from a shortlist of 15 young politicians.

The other judges are: former Prime Minister of the Netherlands Jan Peter Balkenende; Senator Sherry Rehman, the first female leader of the Opposition in Pakistan; Tara Houska, tribal attorney and former advisor on Native American Affairs for Bernie Sanders; Thuli Madonsela, former Public Protector and one of the writers of the South African constitution; Yuriko Koike, current and first female Governor of Tokyo.

The winners will be presented with the Award at the One Young World 2021 Summit taking place in Munich, 23-26 April. -- BAP, GMA News
