The Philippine National Police on Saturday expressed grief over the death of  former Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Alfredo Lim.

In a statement dated August 8, 2020, the PNP likewise extended its condolences, and offered comforting thoughts and prayers to the family of former Manila Mayor Lim, who also had served as a policeman.

“General Lim passed on to the great beyond on the same day (August 8, 2020) that the PNP commemorates the establishment of the Police Service in the Philippines 119 years ago,” the PNP said.

“He must be really destined to go this way in the name of the profession that he truly loved and cherished,” it added.

The PNP expressed gratitude for Lim’s “legacy of efficiency” that, it said,  shall serve as the standard of performance in the police service.

“His undying words: ‘The law applies to all, otherwise, none at all,’ reminds us that we live under a regime of law where the law is supreme, and nobody but nobody is above the law,” the PNP said.

“The PNP is honored to pay him our last respects and accord him the final honors befitting a police veteran and a statesman,” it added.

Lim passed away on Saturday. He was 90 years old.

On Friday night, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno confirmed that Lim had been infected with COVID-19.

Lim, a former police official, served as senator from 2004 to 2007. He was Manila mayor for a total of 12 years from 1992 to 1999, and from 2007 to 2013.

He was also former director of the National Bureau of Investigation (1989-1992) and secretary of the DILG (2000 to 2001) during the administration of President Joseph Estrada, who had beaten him in the 1998 presidential elections.

On Saturday, condolences were conveyed to the family by Palace spokesperson Harry Roque, former President Joseph Estrada, and Senator Lito Lapid. —LBG, GMA News
