NAT'L HEROES' DAY MESSAGE

Lorenzana calls on public to unite, support each other amid fight vs. COVID-19, criminality

As the country observes National Heroes' Day on Monday, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana urged the public to unite and work together in the fight not only against the COVID-19 pandemic, but criminality and terrorism as well.

"Let this day serve as a reminder for us to unite and support each other as we recover from the effects of the pandemic as well as work together to safeguard our communities from the threat of criminality, terrorism and violent extremism," Lorenzana said in his National Heroes' Day message.

"Let us show the world the inherent traits of Bayanihan and love of country; the Filipino brand of heroism that is the foundation of our nationhood," he added.

Lorenzana also remembered the bravery, heroism, and patriotism of heroes who have lived and died in service to build a just, peaceful, and prosperous nation.

"Their deeds set into motion the emergence of a national consciousness that enabled us to evolve as a free and sovereign nation," Lorenzana said.

The Defense chief also honored modern-day heroes who continue to serve despite the challenges being faced by the country.

"We likewise owe a debt of gratitude to our present heroes — our brave frontliners, the soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines, and selfless citizens who continue to serve the country amid the challenges and threats we are currently facing," Lorenzana said.

The National Task Force Against COVID-19 also lauded medical frontliners for their sacrifice to ensure Filipinos' health and safety amid the health crisis, calling them "modern-day heroes." —Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
