Pemberton receives release papers

US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton on Friday received his release papers as the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) formally transferred his custody to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) for deportation.

BuCor spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag said the transfer was completed at 11:50 a.m.

"As of 1150H today, the custody of Mr Pemberton has been transferred completely to the BI," he said.

"There are no more BuCor officers involved in the custody of Mr. Pemberton."

Despite the transfer of custody, Pemberton, convicted of homicide for the killing of Filipino transgender woman Jennifer Laude in 2014, will remain at his detention facility inside Camp Aguinaldo until he is deported.

The BI earlier said it will complete deportation proceedings after he is released from BuCor custody.

Pemberton was ordered deported for being an "undesirable alien" three months before his conviction in 2015. KBK, GMA News
