Palace to public: Give DPWH task force vs. corruption a chance
Malacañang on Tuesday backed the creation of an anti-corruption unit at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), saying the body should be given the chance to do its job.
DPWH Secretary Mark Villar last week ordered the creation of the Task Force Against Graft and Corruption (TAG) after state auditors flagged over P100 billion worth of delayed and unimplemented projects in 2019.
The order also came after President Rodrigo Duterte mentioned corrupt practices linked to the implementation of projects such as right-of-way acquisition.
“Siguro po paunang hakbang lamang ‘yan na ginawa ng DPWH para nga i-address ‘yung problema ng korapsyon na inilabas ng ating Presidente,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said at a news conference.
“Let’s give them a chance dahil sa aking pagkakaalam eh talagang this is one of the rare moments na ina-address natin ang korapsyon diyan sa DPWH na sabi nga ni Presidente ay lantaran at parang systemic.”
Roque said the task force may also submit its findings to the Office of the President.
On Monday night, Duterte said those occupying lower ranks are likely to be involved in corruption. He also vouched for Villar’s integrity, saying he does not need to steal public funds because he is rich.
