Philippines out of top 20 countries with most COVID-19 cases

The Philippines has dropped out of the top 20 countries with the most number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) across the globe.

According to Mel Tiangco’s report on “24 Oras,” a tally by the Johns Hopkins University showed that Ukraine has taken the 20th spot with 381,664 cases.

Meanwhile, the Philippines has reported a total of 376,935 cases with 329,848 recoveries and 7,147 fatalities as of Thursday.

Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide has reached more than 44.5 million.

Of this, America has recorded the most number of cases with 8,858,089, followed by India with 8,040, 203, and Brazil with 5,468,270.

A separate tally by Agence France-Presse, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), showed that the coronavirus has killed at least 1,175,992 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December.

Of the 44,561,260 cases that have been registered, at least 29,949,000 are now considered recovered.

The tallies probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

On Wednesday, 6,979 new deaths and 479,389 new cases were recorded worldwide.

Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were United States with 1,000 new deaths, followed by India with 517 and Brazil with 510.

In the US, at least 3,518,140 people have been declared recovered.

The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Peru with 104 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Belgium with 96, Spain 76, Brazil 75.

China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 85,915 cases, including 4,634 deaths and 80,943 recoveries.

Latin America and the Caribbean overall has 397,054 deaths from 11,127,158 cases, Europe 270,927 deaths from 9,672,097 infections, and the United States and Canada 237,733 deaths from 9,084,886 cases.

Asia has reported 168,592 deaths from 10,387,612 cases, the Middle East 58,516 deaths from 2,504,992 cases, Africa 42,149 deaths from 1,750,186 cases, and Oceania 1,021 deaths from 34,332 cases.

As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly to the previous day's tallies. - Joahna Lei Casilao with Agence France-Presse
