Sinas urged to restore public trust in the police

Ako Bicol party-list Representative Alfredo Garbin Jr. on Monday called on Police Major General Debold Sinas, who has been appointed as the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), to restore the public's trust in the police.

In a statement, Garbin congratulated Sinas for his promotion to the top post, as he encouraged him to ensure public safety and security during the yuletide season.

According to the lawmaker, police visibility is much needed as Christmas is fast approaching, where cases of holdup, robbery, and other crimes become more prevalent.

"I ask the new leadership of the PNP, now under Police General Debold Sinas, to assure all Filipinos of their safety and security," Garbin said.

"Public trust in the police has been shaken because of the continuing involvement of some police officers in illegal drugs, illegal gambling, red-tagging, and rape," he added.

At the same time, Garbin also said the PNP should frequently update the public on the complete list and details of all pending and resolved administrative and criminal cases against police officers.

He also urged the disclosure of a complete list of all policemen on absence without leave (AWOL) status.

"These PNP personnel who have betrayed the public trust and those dismissed from the service would likely resort to criminal activities on their own or as part of syndicates," Garbin said.

"It is but right that the media and the general public are made continually aware of the threat these AWOL and dismissed officers pose to the safety and security," he added.

Prior to his appointment, Sinas served as chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), although he became infamous over the mañanita held on May 8 to mark his birthday, despite the ban on mass gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Sinas would not be absolved of liability over the mañanita incident. — BM, GMA News
