Duterte flying out to Legazpi after Cagayan briefing

President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday afternoon said he is set to fly out to Legazpi City after holding a briefing in flood-hit Cagayan.

After meeting with Cabinet secretaries in Cagayan, one of the hard-hit areas of Typhoon Ulysses (international name: Vamco), Duterte quipped that he said he would also hold a courtesy call on Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo, a native of the Bicol region.

"Hindi na ako magtagal. I have to fly to — ganito rin — sa Legaspi... Si Leni taga-doon 'yan. Mag-courtesy call tayo sa kanya," Duterte said.

Robredo, however, is also in Cagayan to handle relief operations after towns and municipalities were submerged over the weekend after heavy rains and the release of water from the Magat Dam and other reservoirs brought about massive flooding.

In a post on her Twitter account, Robredo said she arrived in Cagayan on Sunday morning. "Our team arrived a few hours earlier with supplies. Situation is so much better Many areas still flooded but water receded already."

Robredo is from Naga in Camarines Sur, where her late husband — former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo — served as a long-time City Mayor. She also won as Third District of Camarines Sur in 2013, prior to being elected as Vice President.

Meanwhile, Legazpi — where Duterte is headed — is located in Albay, a different province. —JST, GMA News
