No tsunami threat in Philippines due to magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Chile —PHIVOLCS


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Monday said there is no threat of tsunami in the country following a magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Chile.

"A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 occurred in Off the coast of Central Chile on 28 December 2020 at 05:39 AM (Philippine Standard Time) located at 39.3 oS, 75.0 oW with depth of 10 km," PHIVOLCS said in its Tsunami Information No. 1 issued at 5:50 a.m.

"No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data," it added.

The earthquake in Chile struck off the coast of Los Lagos on Sunday, Chile time (5:39 a.m. Monday in the Philippines), the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The said earthquake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), according to the EMSC. —KG, GMA News
