1,658 new cases push Philippines’ tally over to over 527,000


The Philippines’ coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caseload hit 527,272 on Monday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 1,658 new infections as five laboratories failed to submit reports on time.

Recoveries now total 487,574 after 27 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease.

The death toll also climbed to 10,807 with 58 new fatalities.

There are also 28,891 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine.

Meanwhile, the OCTA Research group underscored the need to explore whether the UK coronavirus variant is present in Cebu. 

Experts earlier sounded the alarm on a surge of infections in Cebu province, which they said had become a cause for “serious concern.” 

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the weekly genome sequencing of 750 samples was delayed due to a lack of reagents. —LDF, GMA News
