Flower prices still expected to go up by 50% on Feb. 14

A flower vendor on Friday advised the public to expect a 50 percent hike in the price of flowers on Valentine's Day, according to Saleema Refran’s report on “24 Oras.”

“Mga 50 percent, ganyan, tataas pa ‘yan. dahil kulang ng supply ng bulaklak. syempre pag kaonti, tinataas nila. Pag marami supply ng rose, ayan bababa,” Pines Gamboa, a flower vendor, said.

Two days before Valentine's Day, however, there was already an increase in prices.

According to vendors, only a few individuals planted this season due to poor profits. Vendors also scrambled for supply due to the high demand.

At the Dangwa Flower Market in Manila, a bundle of roses or 2 dozen roses cost P1,500 while each rose costs almost P100 per piece.

Meanwhile, imported Ecuadorian roses cost P200 per piece.

Each bundle of dried flowers also costs a minimum of P300.

“Hindi na siya masisira kasi dry na. Ngayon, wag lang babasain. Aabot ‘yan ng ilang buwan o taon basta maalagaan lang ng maayos,” Freddi Camo, a flower vendor, said. — Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
