11,378 new COVID-19 infections bring Philippines’ tally to 876,225


The Philippines’ COVID-19 tally rose to 876,225 on Monday after the Department of Health announced 11,378 new infections as six laboratories failed to submit data on time.

This is the fourth straight day where more than 11,000 cases were reported.

The DOH said the new cases brought the number of active cases in the country to 157,451.

Of this, 97% are mild, 1.7% are asymptomatic, 0.5 are critical and 0.6% are in severe condition.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries also climbed to 703,625 after 267 more patients defeated the respiratory illness.

The death toll increased to 15,149 with 204 new fatalities. This is also the fourth consecutive day where more than 200 deaths were reported.

The DOH noted that 21 duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 34 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

Data from the DOH also showed that 65% of the country’s intensive care unit beds and 44% of the mechanical ventilators are utilized.

On Sunday, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque announced that Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal — collectively known as the National Capital Region Plus — will be placed under modified enhanced community quarantine from April 12 until April 30.

Earlier in the day, an expert from the OCTA Research group said he is expecting a downward trend of COVID-19 cases with the implementation of the MECQ in the NCR Plus until April 30.

Guido David said the downward trend in the number of COVID-19 infections may happen in a week or two.—LDF, GMA News
