Roque after Duterte's public address: The President is healthy

President Rodrigo Duterte showing up for his public address on Monday night, among other activities, prove he is healthy, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Tuesday.

Roque was referring to the President’s weekly Talk to the People which was postponed twice last week, the first time for reasons not made public and the second time due to 45 members of the Presidential Security Group testing positive for COVID-19.

“Ang paglabas ng ating Pangulo ay patunay na ang Punong Ehekutibo ay nananatiling fit, healthy–not to mention, mukhang bumata sa kaniyang edad,” Roque said in a Palace briefing.

The President is 76 years old.

While his regular public address was postponed twice last week, the President was seen riding a motorcycle, jogging, and playing golf—all during the night—in photos and videos released by his former long time assistant and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go.

Pressed why the President had time for leisure but did not have the time to do the regular public address, Roque argued that the President does not need to brag about this work.

On Monday night, the President said that having time for leisure proves he is healthy enough to be President

“Kung sabihin mo may sakit ako, may sakit ako. Pero kung sabihin mo may sakit ako ngayon that would prevent me from exercising the powers of the presidency, wala ho,” he said during his Talk to the People address.

(If you say I am sick, I am sick. But if you say I am sick now that I cannot exercise the powers of the presidency, that is not the case.)

“Kaya ako nakaka-swing ng golf, tapos nagmomotor eh kasi kaya ko pa (That is why I can play golf, ride a motorcycle, because I am still able),” the President added.
