5,790 new COVID-19 infections bring Philippines’ tally to 1,143,963

The Department of Health on Sunday reported 5,790 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, raising the total tally to 1,143,963, as six laboratories failed to submit data on time.

The DOH said the low number of cases was due to the low testing output of laboratories on Friday.

The DOH said the new cases brought the number of active cases in the country to 54,904.

Of these, 93.3% were mild, 2.1% were asymptomatic, 1.9% were severe, and 1.4% were in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries climbed to 1,069,868 after 7,541 more patients overcame the respiratory illness.

The death toll increased to 19,191 with 140 new fatalities.

The DOH noted that 14 duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 90 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

Data from the DOH also showed that 58% of the country’s intensive care unit beds and 40% of mechanical ventilators were utilized. — DVM, GMA News
