VP Robredo says Eleazar 'making all the right steps' as PNP chief

Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday praised Philippine National Police chief General Guillermo Eleazar, saying that he is "making all the right steps" in leading the 250,000-strong police force.

In her weekly radio program, the vice president said Eleazar's leadership was "encouraging" for making sure that the PNP will be weed out of scalawags and rogue personnel will be punished.

"Tingin ko si Eleazar is making all the rights steps: Una, sa pagsabi na gagawan namin ng paraan, hindi makakalusot nang hindi pinapatawan ng penalties or punishment yung mga hindi maayos ang paggawa," said Robredo.

(I think he is making all the right steps for addressing these issues and making sure that those who fail to do their job properly will face penalties or punishment.)

Robredo also lauded the PNP chief for granting the Department of Justice access to  information on anti-drug police operations, which includes  61 cases where PNP found administrative and criminal liability on its personnel.

"Malaking bagay ito sana tuloy tuloy, ma-strengthen ang institution at malinis yung magandang pangalan, na nag-suffer because of extra judicial killings" (This is a big step and I hope this will continue to strengthen the PNP institution and clear its name), she added.

Compared to past PNP leadership, Robredo noted, only Eleazar acknowledged the problems with some of the members of the police organization.

Eleazar also did a good job when he was formerly the head of National Capital Region Police Office, and the Quezon City Police District, Robredo said.

Last week, the Department of Justice had a meeting with the PNP  to discuss active collaboration in the review the deaths of suspects in police's anti-illegal drug operations, and in the investigation of alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) and related cases. —LBG, GMA News
