VP Robredo: Stand with LGBT in fight for equal rights

Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday called on the public to stand with the members of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) community in its fight for equal rights.

Robredo made the appeal in a statement for the celebration of Pride Month, saying that while the LGBTQIA+ community provided a shelter to the oppressed, a voice to the marginalized, and a family to the isolated, challenges persist such as lack of employment opportunities and access to healthcare services, as well as different forms of violence and discrimination in public and virtual spaces.

“There remains a lot to push for to establish an atmosphere of acceptance and genuine equality for all. That is why today and beyond this month-long celebration, we are called to intensify our efforts,” Robredo said.

“Our goal is to be in a society where everyone is provided shelter, help...being taken care of, regardless of their gender or financial capacity; where the members of LGBTQIA are embraced as a fellow human being with same rights and dignity that deserve the same love, respect, and acceptance as everyone else,” she added.

Robredo then said that there is a need to continue to deepen the ties that bind the Filipinos’ resolve to build a fairer, humane, truly equitable society.
