Upsilon Sigma Phi launches climate change talks

Upsilon Sigma Phi has launched Climate Action Network (CAN), which is a discussion platform to raise awareness on the worsening global climate situation and the efforts aimed at addressing the issue.

The UpsilonCAN initiative titled, "Saving our Planet, One U-Talk at a Time!"  will be a series of talks on the issue of climate change. Those willing to participate in the climate talks can log on to http://upsiloncan.eventbrite.com/ for the calendar of events.

One of the participants in the network, which was launched in May 2021, was Department of Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, who laid down the contributions of the Philippines to the Paris Agreement.

He added that the Philippine government will remain active in creating policies, laws and initiatives to boost climate resilience.

"The country is one step further in meeting the development goals of affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action," said Fuentebella in an e-mailed statement.

In the same statement, House Majority Representative and Upsilon Sigma Phi Alumni Association (USPAA) Chairman Martin Romualdez hailed the climate initiative of Batch 1995, which was led by Dominic Afuang, Justinn Valerio and Norman Garcia.

For his part, Romualdez pointed out that the pandemic "provided our planet a brief respite" that allows it to recover, adding that Filipinos must take the opportunity to create solutions to respond to the climate crisis.

Unilever Vice President for Sustainability and USPAA President Ed Sunico said that the initiative seeks to raise that apart from the pandemic, climate crisis and social inequality are also biggest threats in the country.

"We want to spread the message that each Filipino can contribute to addressing climate change and we created a platform for it," Sunico added. -- Consuelo Marquez/BAP, GMA News
