DILG orders probe into shooting of curfew violator in Manila

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has ordered the police to look into the shooting of a curfew violator — reportedly a mentally unstable person — in Tondo, Manila.

Interviewed on GMA News' Unang Balita, DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said the department will not tolerate such possible abuse.

“Iniimbestigahan na po natin ang report na ito. Ang Philippine National Police ay inatasan na po ni Secretary Eduardo Año upang alamin ang puno't dulo nito,” he said.

(We are already investigating this. Secretary Eduardo Año already directed the PNP to determine the root cause of this incident)

On Saturday, barangay peace and security officer Cesar Panlaqui shot a 59-year-old curfew violator in Tayuman amid the implementation of enhanced community quarantine in the National Capital Region.

The curfew violator, who was carrying toy guns, died on the spot after sustaining a gunshot wound on the chest.

Panlaqui was arrested on Sunday morning. According to him, he accosted the victim for making noise by banging the gates and doors of the houses in the area.

A revolver was recovered from the suspect. According to the police, the firearm is not documented and does not have a serial number.

Panlaqui said the revolver was for self-defense. —KBK, GMA News
