PNP confirms 3 Delta variant cases among its ranks

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday confirmed that three cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19 were detected among its personnel.

PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Ronaldo Olay told GMA News Online that Administrative Support for COVID-19 Task Force commander Police Lieutenant General Joselito Vera Cruz confirmed the information.

“Yes. We have three confirmed Delta variant cases. They were tested COVID positive last July and had finished their 14-day isolation,” Vera Cruz said in a message confirmed by Olay.

However, Vera Cruz added that the results of their genome sequencing were just released this August.

Due to this, the three police personnel, assigned at the Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP), underwent another RT-PCR test, as advised by the Department of Health.

One of them again tested positive and now admitted in an isolation facility of a local government unit.

Fortunately, one personnel turned negative for the disease but is still under home quarantine. The police personnel was set to undergo a test again on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the other one, who is also under home quarantine, is still waiting for his result.

Citing the AVSEGROUP, Vera Cruz said the close contacts of the infected PNP personnel tested negative for COVID-19.

As of Friday, the PNP has recorded a total of 32,077 COVID-19 COVID-19 cases with 158 new infections among its personnel.

At least 30,147 have already recovered while 1,841 are still active cases.

The death toll in PNP due to COVID-19 is now at 89 after another cop reportedly died due to the disease, according to the police organization. — RSJ, GMA News
