PNP COVID-19 cases exceed 33,000; death toll at 99


The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases within the Philippine National Police rose to 33,034 on Friday with 123 new infections.

According to the PNP, 179 more recoveries brought the total to 31,178.

Meanwhile, the death toll climbed to 99 after one more succumbed to the illness.

PNP police general Guillermo Eleazar said the fatality was a 44-year-old police officer assigned to Cebu City. He passed away on August 18 due to acute respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19.

"On August 11, said patient experienced mild symptoms of Covid-19 and immediately underwent an RT-PCR test which yielded a positive result," Eleazar said.

At present, a total of 86,843 police personnel have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 while 101,304 have received at least one dose.

The PNP said there are only 34,022 who remained unvaccinated.

The Philippines logged a total of 1,807,800 confirmed cases, of which 1,653,351 have recovered and 31,198 have died. — DVM, GMA News
