PNP death toll due to COVID-19 hits 100

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded a total of 100 fatalities among its personnel due to COVID-19 as of Monday, as another cop died due to the disease on Sunday.

In a statement, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar identified the latest fatality as a 44-year-old police staff sergeant assigned in Police Regional Office 1.

The deceased cop, who is fully vaccinated, was immuno-compromised with high comorbidity. According to his relative, the police officer is undergoing dialysis due to chronic kidney disease.

"He was also on work-from-home status since the start of the pandemic, however, on August 19, he was rushed to a hospital due to difficulty of breathing and was tested positive of the said virus,” Eleazar said.

“On August 22, he succumbed," he added.

As of Monday, the PNP has recorded a total of 33,438 COVID-19 cases with 150 new infections. At least 31,492 have already recovered, while 1,846 are still active cases.

At least 88,940 or 40.03% of PNP personnel have already been fully vaccinated, while 103,623 or 46.64% have already received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Around 29,606 or 13.33% police personnel have yet to be vaccinated, the PNP said. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
