Voter applicants form long lines as Comelec deadline draws near

Applicants seeking to register to vote in the May 2022 national and local elections waited in long lines on Saturday outside a mall in Pasay City as the deadline for voter registration nears.

According to a report on “24 Oras Weekend,” some of the applicants had waited in line starting 7 a.m. and finished their registration at past 1 p.m.

Pasay Election Officer Ronald Santiago said they set the cut-off at 9 a.m. as they only had two machines for the registration process.

Those who did not make it to the cut-off were given forms for processing on Monday in a another mall.

Also, the report said that the Pasay voter registration situation was the same at a mall in Zamboanga City.

On the other hand, hundreds of overseas Filipino workers also waited in line at the Philippine Consular Office in Hong Kong to register.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) had set September 30, 2021 as the deadline for voter registration. 

But last Friday, the Comelec announced that it is convening a management committee meeting amid "public clamor" for the extension of the voter registration period. —LBG, GMA News
