DOJ indicts Julian Ongpin over drugs

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday said it has indicted Julian Ongpin, son of prominent businessman and former Trade secretary Roberto Ongpin, for possession of dangerous drugs.

The indictment stemmed from the complaint filed by the Philippine National Police in connection with the 12 grams of cocaine found in Ongpin’s room in a beach resort in La Union where artist Bree Jonson was found dead in September.

According to the DOJ, the criminal information against Ongpin will be filed with the Regional Trial Court in San Fernando, La Union.

“The same information also states that the offense is non-bailable,” the DOJ said.

Ongpin is also a person of interest in the death of Jonson, who was found dead in the room she shared with Ongpin after police authorities responded to a report of alleged suicide on September 22.

Jonson's mother, taking note of the scars on Ongpin's arm, believes her daughter fought for her life and did not commit suicide.

Ongpin, meanwhile, said he got the wounds after forcibly opening the door of the restroom to free Jonson, who allegedly locked herself in.

He also denied having a disagreement with Jonson on the same day she was found lifeless.

Both Ongpin and Jonson tested positive for cocaine. —KBK, GMA News
