Duterte names Bulay as new Comelec commissioner

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Rey Bulay as one of the Commissioners of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the Palace said Thursday.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Bulay will serve as Comelec official until February 2, 2027.

“We are confident that Atty. Bulay will ensure the conduct of honest, orderly, credible and peaceful elections,” Roque said.

Comelec chairman Sheriff Abas welcomed Bulay's appointment.

"Atty. Bulay, who is currently the Chief Prosecutor of Manila and former Commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government, is a timely addition to the COMELEC En Banc especially now that we are in the midst of our preparations for the 2022 national and local elections," Abas said in a statement.

"His vast experience in law enforcement and the pursuit of good governance will greatly contribute to the Commission's thrust in the advancement of honest, orderly, peaceful, credible, and safe elections," he added.

Prior to being appointed to the Comelec, Bulay served as commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government which is tasked to recover ill-gotten wealth of late dictator President Ferdinand Marcos and his family.

After his PCGG stint, Bulay also served as Manila Chief Prosecutor.

“We wish Atty. Bulay all the best in his new assignment,” Roque added.—with Ma. Angelica Garcia/LDF, GMA News
