Duterte to run for VP in Eleksyon 2022

President Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday that he would run for vice president in the May 2022 elections.

Duterte made the announcement at the Commission on Elections’ main office in Manila following Senator Christopher "Bong" Go’s withdrawal of his certificate of candidacy for vice president under the PDP-Laban party.

"Magba-vice (I will run for vice president)," Duterte told reporters when asked if he would be seeking a Senate seat as earlier pushed by his allies.

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said Duterte would file his COC for vice president on November 15, the deadline for withdrawal and substitution for national and local elections aspirants.

If Duterte pursues his vice presidential bid, he is set to clash with his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, who earlier filed her COC for vice president under Lakas-CMD.

The President, however, seemed unaware of this development.

"I don't know. Nag-file ba (Did she file her candidacy already)?" Duterte said when asked if he was planning to run against Mayor Sara.

PDP-Laban Cusi wing’s original plan was for Duterte to run for vice president with Go as the presidential bet.

Duterte even accepted his party’s nomination, but he changed his mind on October 2 when he announced he would be retiring from politics.

This came after a Social Weather Stations poll found that a majority of Filipinos believed that a president running for vice president in the next election would violate the 1987 Constitution. — DVM/VBL, GMA News
