Depressed OFW in Hong Kong cuts off private part

An OFW from Hong Kong cut off his private part allegedly due to extreme depression, according to a report on Unang Balita on Friday.

The OFW reportedly threw the severed body part into a toilet.

The 42-year-old OFW, currently employed as a driver, was immediately rushed to the hospital where he confessed to having multiple problems.

Data from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) indicates that at least three OFWs were sent back to the Philippines in October due to mental health problems.

Studies for decades have shown that alienation in a new country and separation from familiar settings or loved ones put migrants at a high risk of depression, anxiety, or feelings of melancholy and listlessness.

According to the World Health Organization, depression affects more than 300 million people worldwide and is predicted to become the leading cause of the global burden of disease by 2030. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
