Child dies; siblings, father fall ill after eating beans, cassava in Abra

A man and four of his children fell ill after having patani (lima beans) and kamoteng kahoy (cassava) for dinner in Abra Tuesday night, with one of the children dying at a hospital early Wednesday.

The family gathered the food from a forested area in San Isidro town, GMA Ilocos' Brigette Mayor reported Wednesday on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."

Initially, three of the children were rushed to the hospital before dawn after complaining of weakness, vomiting, dizziness, and numbness in the mouth.

After a few hours, the father and another child were also rushed to the hospital. One of the children later died.

An investigation showed the family had soup from the beans and cassava for dinner.

But the mother, who also ate the food, did not fall ill.

A nurse at the hospital said the victims could have been poisoned but added they are verifying if it was because of the beans and cassava.

"Nung isugod sila rito nakaramdam sila ng panghihina, pagsusuka at nanginginig yung bibig nila," said nurse Marlyn Alagao. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
