DENR: Several Cebu areas prone to storm surges, floods, landslides

With the rainy season now here, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources reminded Cebu residents Wednesday to take precautions in several areas prone to storm surges, flooding and landslides.

This was after the agency conducted its geohazard assessment and mapping of Central Visayas, GMA Cebu's Alan Domingo reported.

Among the barangays deemed most hazardous to flooding in Cebu City are Kasambagan, Kinasang-an, Labangon, Mabolo, and downtown area.

State-run Philippine Information Agency said other barangays deemed flood-prone include Bonbon and the area along Guadalupe River as well as Berador.

Areas deemed prone to storm surges include:

- Barangay Arpili, Balamban town
- Barangay Tungkil, Minglanilla town
- Barangay Tangke, Talisay City
- Barangay Kinatarcan, Sta. Fe

The PIA said other storm surge-prone areas include:

- Barangays Talisay and Maricaban in Sta. Fe
- Barangays Tarong, Mancilang and Codia in Madridejos town
- Patao, Pitogo in Bantayan Tangke in Talisay City

At least 19 barangays in Cebu City are also highly susceptible to landslides, the DENR said. These include:

- Lusaran
- Binaliw
- Guba
- Budla-an
- Malubog
- Buot-taup
- Busay
- Sirao
- Taptap
- Tagbao
- Tabunan
- Pung-ol Sibugay
- Sudlon I and II
- Buhisan
- Sapangdaku
- Pamutan
- Adlaon

Meanwhile, the DENR continues to monitor establishments and vehicles to see if they conform with environment standards.

The PIA quoted Cyndylyn Pepito, a DENR-7 environmental management specialist, as saying the top pollutants in Cebu include vehicles with exhaust mufflers such as cars, jeepneys, and trucks.

Pepito said the penalty for violating the Clean Air Act is P10,000 to P200,000 per day, per violation. — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
