Mount Bulusan spews ash

Mount Bulusan spewed dark gray ash on Friday afternoon following a phreatic eruption, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In a tweet, Phivolcs said Bulusan "generated a phreatic eruption" for 280 seconds and spewed "1.5km high dark gray ash column at 4:54 p.m. today."

Phreatic eruptions are steam-driven explosions that occur when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or new volcanic deposits. —KBK, GMA News
