Municipalities  and barangays within the 1-km bird flu quarantine radius

To stop the bird flu outbreak from spreading beyond the immediately affected areas in Pampanga, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) declared a 1-kilometer quarantine radius in the municipality of San Luis.

Three municipalities were encompassed within the 1-km quarantine zone, where an estimated 200,000 heads of poultry – quails, ducks and chickens – will be culled.

The BAI also declared a 7-km control area, encompassing four other municipalities, according to data released by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol on Tuesday.

Avoid migratory birds

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has urged the public to avoid any contact with migratory birds.

In a press conference on Friday, Piñol said the avian influenza virus probably got into the country via migratory birds from China, or ducks smuggled into the country – also from China.

According to the BAI on Monday, the culling operations will take six days to complete due to a shortage in manpower.

"We have to adjust po. So this will run about five to six days," Arlene Vystacio, head of the Animal Disease Control Section of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), said in a press briefing in Quezon City. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/VDS, GMA News
