BFAR Region 2 outlines measures to ensure safer aquaculture products

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region II and its local government counterparts held a meeting last Wednesday in Tugegarao City, Cagayan to outline measures in ensuring safer aquaculture products, including farmed fish and other aquatic species.

In a statement, BFAR Region II said the measures that were discussed "will address the use of antibiotics and other banned or regulated substances in fish farming, and the presence of heavy metals and coliforms in farmed fishes."

According to Vet. Jefferson Soriano, head of the Fish Health Laboratory at the BFAR RO2, "Monitoring of fish culture areas and analysis of fish samples reveal the use of antibiotics and presence of heavy metals and coliform, in some sites."

He added that while the values derived were within tolerable level, the situation can be problematic if no actions will be taken.

Concerned agencies at the meeting agreed to reinforce their information campaign, promote compliance to the Code of Good Aquaculture Practice (GAqP), and implement farm registration for monitoring purposes.

They will also emphasize the reiteration of relevant local ordinances, including compliance with solid waste management law.

BFAR-II Regional Director Dr. Milagros C. Morales added that the presented precautionary measures are "designed to help producers and consumers alike, through better sales and safer fish products." —Maia Tria/LBG, GMA news
