Army vows to crush ‘terrorist criminals’ in Sulu

The Philippine Army on Sunday vowed to crush the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), believed to be behind last week's deadly attack on a cathedral in Jolo, Sulu.

“Despite the casualties it incurred, [the Philippine Army] is determined to continue its effort in crushing these terrorist criminals and push them to their limit until they are totally exterminated,” the Army said in a press release.

Philippine Army commander Lieutenant General Macairog S. Alberto vowed that the Army will fully utilize its resources and capabilities to support its forces fighting on the ground.

In the Army's statement, Alberto said that the troops will continue to extinguish "the flames of terrorism to ensure the safety and protection of the people and bring the desired normalcy in Sulu."

While conducting pursuit operations in the remote areas of Patikul on Saturday, the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion troops encountered around 100 ASG members.

The encounter led to three dead and at least 13 wounded ASG members including their subleader Idang Suksukan. On the government side, five soldiers were killed and 18 were wounded.

“I would like to remind everyone that terrorism is real and remains a clear and present danger. Hence, I urge everybody to help and join in our effort to address this phenomenal threat," Alberto said.

"Moreover, the Philippine Army being at the forefront of combating terrorism is appealing to everyone to remain calm yet vigilant as we pursue our collective effort in bringing peace and stability for our country,” he added. — Joviland Rita/BM, GMA News
