3 alleged ASG members killed in Sulu clash

Three alleged members of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group were killed by government troops in an encounter in Banguingui, Sulu, according to the military on Monday.

A firefight transpired on Sunday in Simisa Island and the three fatalities were identified as followers of the ASG subleader Najir Arik.

Another clash occurred on Monday during a pursuit operation in the area.

The exchange of fire, which lasted for 20 minutes, left no casualties on the side of the government troops.

Clearing operations are ongoing to determine if there are more enemies killed.

"The Joint Task Force Sulu continues to intensify the conduct of offensives against the Abu Sayyaf. We are certain that all measures are now being undertaken, in accordance with the rules of engagement," said Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

Last week, the military seized a getaway speedboat of the terrorist group, trapping some bandits in the island. —Dona Magsino/ LDF, GMA News
