10 hurt in Eastern Samar quake —NDRRMC

Ten people suffered injuries from Tuesday's magnitude 6.5 earthquake in Eastern Samar, according to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In its report issued Wednesday morning, the NDRRMC 35 structures and buildings sustained damage due to the quake.

The tremor also resulted in power interruption in Eastern and Northern Samar.

Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense in Eastern Visayas identified seven of the casualties as Ricky Pabroa, 39; Joseph Froilan, 46; Ernesto Aseo, 42; William Milagros, 48; Nikki Osal, 34; Clarita Borden; and Analyn Ibanez.

The quake, which followed a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in Luzon, struck Eastern Samar at 1:37 p.m. on April 23, with its epicenter traced at San Julian, where it was felt at Intensity VI.

In an interview on Unang Hirit, PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge Renato Solidum said the earthquake in Eastern Samar was caused by the downward movement of Philippine sea plates along the Philippine Trench, which moved quickly from offshore Bicol to offshore Davao Oriental.

Solidum said the Eastern Samar quake was different from the one that rocked Central Luzon and Metro Manila on April 22.

Disaster officials said 16 people died from the Luzon earthquake, 12 of them in Porac, Pampanga. —KBK, GMA News
