4 suspected Abu Sayyaf members killed in Basilan clash

Four suspected Abu Sayyaf fighters were killed following a clash with government security forces in Basilan early Wednesday morning, a military statement said.

The statement by the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command said the clash transpired at Sitio Gipitan in Barangay Bohe Pahu, Ungkaya Pukan when government forces launched an offensive against the Abu Sayyaf group under sub-leader Furuji Indama.

The statement said the ground troops were provided close air support in pursuing the fleeing terrorists.

It added that troops recovered the four bodies of the Abu Sayyaf members as well as three high-powered firearms during clearing operations.

“Our troops are currently on the ground to pin down the Abu Sayyaf who are on the run and are evading military forces,” the statement quoted Joint Task Force commander Brigadier General Fernando Reyeg as saying.

For his part, Westmincom chief Lieutenant General Arnel dela Vega said the sustained operations in Basilan “manifest [the task force's] mandate in fulfilling its mandate of bringing internal peace and security in the province.” — RSJ, GMA News
