Magnitude-6.3 quake hits Mindanao — PHIVOLCS


A magnitude-6.3 earthquake struck Mindanao Wednesday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

In its second update, the agency said that the temblor, which was tectonic in origin, happened at around 7:37 p.m. with its epicenter traced 22 kilometers southeast of Makilala, Cotabato.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the quake at a slightly stronger magnitude 6.4, and placed the epicenter 7 kilometers east northeast of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.

The epicenter had a depth of two kilometers. 

Intensity VII was felt in Kidapawan City, while Intensity V was felt in Tupi, South Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani.

Intensity IV was felt in Kiamba, Sarangani; T'Boli, South Cotabato; General Santos City; and Intensity III was felt in Cagayan de Oro City; Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

Intensity II was felt in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental; and Intensity I was felt in Dipolog City; Bislig City. 

An aftershock of 5.5 magnitude was recorded in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat at 8:09 p.m.

In the official PHIVOLCS report issued on 10:58 p.m., the temblor is measured at 6.3 magnitude with a depth of 8 kilometers with epicenter 22 kilometers southeast of Tulunan, North Cotabato.

Damages

A school building in Digos City in Davao del Sur was badly damaged by the earthquake. YouScooper Sam Joel Nang, a law student, shared photos of Cor Jesu College in the aftermath of the quake.

 

 

Netizens also shared the effect of the earthquake on hanging installations in their respective areas.
