Davao Airport sustains cracks due to quake aftershocks


The structures of the Davao Airport sustained cracks due to the aftershocks of the 6.9-magnitude quake that hit the area earlier in the day, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said Sunday.

In a status report, CAAP said some that while there were no damages on the airport's runway, there were some structural damages reported.

"Recent strong aftershock resulted to cracks on the ground near Passenger Boarding Bridge #5 and International Baggage buildup area. Still verifying level of damage," the report read.

In a separate interview on GMA Super Radyo dzBB, CAAP Spokesperson Eric Apolonio noted that the Davao Airport operating normally. 

But should flight schedules be interrupted, Apolonio said passengers would be notified by their respective airlines.

"Definitely 'yung mga airlines concerned, tatawagan 'yung ating mga pasahero kung sakaling magkakaroon ng adjustments sa flight," he said.

Data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) indicated that Davao del Sur was hit by a magnitude 6.9 quake, tectonic in origin, at 2:11 p.m. Sunday.

The epicenter was traced 9 kilometers west of the Matanao town with a depth of 3 kilometers, and Intensity VII felt in Matanao and Magsaysay both in Davao del Sur.

According to the latest situation report, no damages were reported in the airports in Mati, Tambler and Cotabato, Butuan, Laguindingan, Pagadian, Dipolog, and Zamboanga which are currently operational. —Jon Viktor Cabuenas/LBG, GMA News
