179 aftershocks so far in Davao del Sur —PHIVOLCS


At least 179 aftershocks have been recorded in the wake of the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked Davao del Sur on Sunday, two government agencies said.

In an 8:50 p.m. update, PHIVOLCS provided the distribution of the aftershocks and said that the total number was as of 6 p.m.

In a separate update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that 40 of the aftershocks were plotted and 10 were felt.

The quake hit at 2:11 p.m. at a depth of three kilometers, with its epicenter some nine kilometers west of the town of Matanao. 

Four people have been reported killed so far: a six-year-old child in Matanao and three persons in a supermarket building in Padada.

In its report, the NDRRMC said that the supermarket building, the Southern Trade Shopping Centre, was "totally damaged."

According to a report on Super Radyo dzBB, Padada MDRRMO head Luke Caduyas said that they may declare a state of calamity in the town.

The municipal hall in Magsaysay town was also totally damaged. Partially damaged buildings include the Padada police station, the Maria Cleta National High School in Padada, and the Hagonoy National High School in the town of Hagonoy, where a total of 315 buildings were damaged. 

Meanwhile, 18 municipalities and cities in the provinces of Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat experience power outages during the quake.  — BM, GMA News
