Sagada temporarily shuts down eco-tourism activities amid COVID-19 threat

Sagada, a known tourist destination in Northern Luzon, announced on Thursday the suspension of its eco-tourism activities due to the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Municipal Mayor James Pooten Jr. released an executive order which states that there is "an urgent need to protect" the town and its residents from the possible entry of the much-dreaded virus.

Eco-tourism activities included in brochures provided by the town's Tourist Information Center such as tours to caves, hanging coffins, waterfalls and other adventure trails will be indefinitely suspended, according to an advisory released by Sagada Tourism on Facebook.

"Everyone is advised to remain vigilant against any signs or symptoms of the said virus," it said.

"Please refer concerned individuals to our NCOV-Fastlane at the Rural Health Unit near the Municipal Building," it added.

Meanwhile, activities at private establishments such as sunrise and sunset viewing decks, as well as pottery and weaving centers will remain open. —Dona Magsino/LDF, GMA News
