Teacher goes house-to-house to enroll students in far-flung communities

A teacher in Sulat, Eastern Samar has been going house-to-house to enroll her students from far-flung communities as the country transitions to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Lei Alviz’s Monday report on “24 Oras,” Khristine Ero said there was no internet signal in Barangay Kandalakit, the reason why she decided to go house-to-house to enroll her students.

Ero had to walk and ride a motorcycle for two-hours to reach the barangay, but she said it was worth it.

“Medyo nahirapan lang tayo sa pagpunta sa ibang mga bahay kasi ‘yong accessibility ng daan is mahirap. Pero sa ibang bahay naman, okay naman,” she said.

Meanwhile, aside from no internet access in the area, parents of students in Barangay Kandalakit did not have the means to purchase gadgets that would be used in online learning.

“Nahihirapan kami. Lalong lalo na sa mga hanap buhay namin, kuntento lang kami sa pagbili lang ng bigas eh paano pa kung bibili pa kami ng mga gadget para mapag-aral ang mga anak namin?,” Rema Florence Jardio said.

Jardio then appealed to the government to provide them with internet access and gadgets for their children.

Meanwhile, an elementary school in Panabo, Davao del Norte, launched a drop-box enrollment program for students with no internet access.

During the procedure, children may be enrolled by submitting the necessary documents through drop boxes.

For those who would be enrolling, face masks, hand washing, and temperature check before entering school premises were required. Ma. Angelica Garcia/DVM, GMA News
