Cebu City reports 60 new COVID-19 cases, total now at 4,539

Cebu City on Wednesday reported 60 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), raising the total to 4,539 as the national government moves to deploy more security forces to restrict movement in the area.

The Cebu City Health Department (CHD) also said total recoveries rose to 2,242 after 65 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease, while the death toll climbed to 100 with 11 new fatalities.

The CHD said there are also 2,197 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine.

Cebu City still has the highest number of infections nationwide, followed by Quezon City with 3,021 cases as of June 24.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año earlier said more cops and soldiers will be deployed to Cebu City to enforce restrictions as the city remains under enhanced community quarantine.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu and officials of the government’s inter-agency COVID-19 task force also visited Cebu City barangays with the highest number of cases earlier on Wednesday.

Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella, for his part, appealed for “calm and understanding” from his constituents as authorities enforce lockdown restrictions. -MDM, GMA News
