Combat, intel ops intensified after Jolo blasts — AFP chief Gapay

Combat and intelligence operations have been intensified to pursue the perpetrators of the deadly explosions in Jolo, Sulu, Armed Forces chief Lieutenant General Gilbert Gapay said Wednesday.

"Our troops on the ground continue to be on high alert to deter similar attacks. Combat and intelligence operations were also ramped up to pursue those responsible," Gapay said in a press statement.

Gapay assured the public that the Abu Sayyaf, which is believed to be behind the attack, would not deter the military in its efforts to end the atrocities in the province.

Gapay also expressed sympathies to the families of the victims, who were security forces and civilians.

"No sensible religion or ideology would ever endorse these hapless attacks," Gapay said. "We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Rest assured that their sacrifices will not be in vain."

At least 15 individuals were killed in the explosions that rocked Barangay Walled City last Monday. Over 70 others were injured in the incidents.

The military said the suspected suicide bombers were the wives of Filipino suicide bomber Norman Lasuca and ISIS liaison to Abu Sayyaf Group Abu Talha.

Joint Task Force Sulu commander Brigadier General William Gonzales identified them as one Nanah and a certain Inda Nhay.

The Philippine Army identified those soldiers killed as Staff Sergeant Louie Cuarteros, Staff Sergeant Manuelito Oria, Private Omair Muksan, Private Juvienjay Emlani, Private John Ray Paler, Private James Apolinario, and Private Aiub Sahid from the 21st Infantry Battalion and Private John Agustin from 35th Infantry Battalion.

The Army vowed to provide burial aid and financial assistance to the families of the killed soldiers.
