Sagada to assess Baguio City's situation before reopening tourism

The local government of Sagada said it will evaluate the situation of nearby Baguio City first before deciding on reopening its doors to tourism.

The tourist spot in Mountain Province remain closed to visitors as a measure to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, despite the reopening of other tourist spots like Baguio City and Boracay, according to an Unang Balita report by Bam Alegre on Wednesday.

Only a few vehicles were seen traveling along the town's roads, as well as residents going out.

Sagada's Tourism Information Center, which used to accommodate many tourists, was also seen without people.

Sagada Mayor James Pooten Jr. said they will assess first the situation of Baguio City before reopening their town to visitors.

"Wait and see kami kung ano ang mangyayari sa result ng pagbukas ng Baguio dahil doon kami naka-base, kung ano 'yung protocols nila sa pagpasok ng mga tao, sa pag-check in nila sa inns, sa pagpunta nila sa tourist sites," Pooten said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.

Pooten said Sagada only had at least three cases of COVID-19 since the lockdown started, all of which were frontliners and were asymptomatic.

The mayor added their town has also been accommodating locally stranded individuals. —Jamil Santos/KG, GMA News
